The History of Trimaran Sailboats

The Back Cove Yacht

The Back Cove yacht is an American- made boat out of Boston, Massachusetts. It has a spoon bow and a gently sloped transom, which indicates its Maine lobster boat heritage. The Back Cove yacht also has a deep vee hull.

There are two types of Back Cove yachts available. As might be expected the options on each of these are slightly different. There is the back cove 29 and the back cove 26. Unfortunately at the time this research was done there is no definitive information available on the Back Cove 26. For the rest of this article let�s take a look at the Back Cove 29.

There are three models of the Back Cove yacht 29. There is the open model, the hard top, and the soft-top. It has a deep vee hull with prop recess and standard trim tabs provide comfort and performance. The standard engine is a two hundred sixty horsepower, six cylinder diesel engine. It can cruise at twenty knots and up to twenty-four knots.

The America�s Cup Early History

The America�s Cup is a well-know boating race that has been around since eighteen hundreds. 1851 was the Great Exposition. The Royal Yacht Club invited the United States to enter a yacht in a regatta to be held as part of the Great Exposition. A group of six men, led by John Cox spent thirty thousand dollars to build a new racing schooner called The America. The ship was launched on May third and designed by Gary Steers. After sailing to France to be repainted and given racing sails she was entered into a fifty-eight mile race around the Isle of Wight. Seventeen other vessels all British were competing. The August 22 race whose prize was the Hundred Guinea Cup - a silver pitcher about two feet tall and weighed about eight pounds. The race began at ten in the morning and The America finished the race ten hours and thirty-seven minutes later eighteen minutes of her nearest competitor. Cox and his partner sold the ship in England for twenty-five thousand dollars, but they brought the cup back to the United States where it would become known as The America�s Cup.

Another significant event in The America�s Cup history happened in eighteen fifty-seven. Cox and his partners presented the New York Yacht Club with the America�s Cup as a deed gift to be challenged by any foreign yacht club. In eighteen sixty-eight the first challenge was presented when James Ashbury of England offered to race his schooner the Cambrea against any American vessel. The challenger had to take on an entire fleet as they had in eighteen fifty-seven. The trophy was renamed The America�s Cup.

In 1871 the America�s cup Ashbury came back with a new yacht the Lovinia and the NYYC agreed to a best four out of seven with a single defending vessel in each race but they reserved the right to change defenders from day to day. Columbia beat the Lovinia in the first two races but last in the third when the steering gears break. Sappo then took over and won the next two races. and kept the cup. The format of the races changed. First it was two out of three races (1876-1884). It then became three out of five (1893-1903). Next it became four out of seven (1930-1987). In 1995 it became five out of nine. The America�s Cup is an invaluable part of sailing history.

Red Cross Swimming and Boating Safety Tips

For years the Red Cross has offered help and made recommendations and in this case we are concerned with swimming and boating safety tips.
These tips are apart from but not limited to the administration of first aid or CPR. The most obvious tip and the most basic of swimming and boating tips is you must learn to swim. There are many organizations that offer swimming lessons for young children all the way to adults. Call around to different places to see if they will be able to help you.

An absolutely crucial swimming and boating tips is to never ever swim alone. This can�t be stressed enough have a swimming buddy at all times whether at the beach or in a pool. Swim only in supervised areas only; you should never swim anywhere where there is not a lifeguard present.

Other swimming and boating tips available to everyone are that they must always obey all rules and any of the posted signs. Alcohol and drugs do not mix with swimming. for a couple of reasons; they impair judgment and coordination. It will negatively affect your swimming skills and diving skills. They can also affect your body�s ability to keep you warm. There are weather tips. For example you want to keep an eye on the local weather. At the first sign of storm, you need to get yourself out of the water immediately. It could be deadly there are undercurrent concerns or the possibility of getting struck by lightning.

Now let us look at swimming and boating tips regarding boating. There is much to consider while boating. Know all of the safety guidelines. This will help keep you and other passengers protected. Know the weather and the risks that are posed to you in the event of a storm or other weather issue. Sudden wind shifts is an example as is lightning and very choppy waters that could all mean there is an approaching storm.

All About Small Diesel Sailboat Engines

There are basically two types of small diesel sailboat engines, a two cycle engine and a four cycle engine. The two cycle engine is made only in Detroit, Michigan. The four cycle engine is represented by both Cummins and Caterpillar and almost all others. There are substantial differences in each engine with their own merits depending on the application of the engines. Small diesel sailboat engines are complex and each does better with a particular application.

Before we get into this let�s talk about some of the myths surrounding small diesel sailboat engines. The reputation of reliability and very long engine life began over one hundred years ago, however this reputation no longer stands. The engines are based on a very simple and slow turning engine with low horse power. There aren�t many of them in existence. The need of today is the need for speed.

Modern diesel engines are sophisticated, complex, of lighter weight and are very powerful. They last no longer really than any gas engine and probably not as long. They are very delicate. The rule of thumb lately is that the more power you try to get from any given engine block the less service life they will provide.

There are pros and cons to small diesels sailboat engines let�s look at two cycle engines first then we will look at four cycle engines. The two cycle diesel engine uses a moderately heavy cylinder block with complex casting. Compared to the MTU or the Volvo engine it is light. When compared to Yanmar or Cummins it is heavy. The downside to this engine is that the many parts create more serious wear problems This is magnified with poor maintenance. Two cycle engines are favored by commercial boat industry. It has a more immediate power delivery because it needs only two revolutions per minute to reach combustion.

The four cycle small diesel sailboat engines requires four revolutions per minute to come to combustion. It has much fewer and less delicate parts. They do require less care. They must throttle up to higher rpm�s of similar amounts to deliver enough power to the propeller.
